Silent Timberline | Original Mixed-Media Painting
Some places are quiet enough to hear the snow falling.
Silent Timberline is a small, square landscape painted in black, white, and shades of gray. A stand of tall evergreens rises on the left, and a second, larger group crowds the right edge. Each tree is built from short, feathery strokes in charcoal, slate, and pale gray. Quick dabs of white sit along the branches like fresh snow, and fine black paint marker lines zigzag through the boughs and add crisp detail. In places the raw canvas shows through the paint, warming the grays with a faint touch of oatmeal.
Between the two groups of trees, a dark, still hillside sits behind a smoky gray bank, and a pale, open lake lies in front of it, brushed in loose horizontal strokes of white and silver. A rustic split-rail fence curves from the lower left into the foreground, with stout posts catching a bright edge of light. A second, smaller stretch of fence sits farther back on the hill, and it gives the scene depth and a sense of distance. Small tufts of dark grass dot the slope. In the sky, soft, smudged clouds of charcoal float over a clear white expanse, with a few tiny marks for distant birds.
The palette is spare and the mood is calm. Nothing in it is loud, yet the layered brushwork gives it a lot of life. The scene feels still, as if the air had stopped to listen.
At 12" × 12", it is an intimate piece for a desk, a shelf, or a small gallery wall, and its quiet gray palette suits almost any room.
For collectors who love a quiet landscape with real texture.
