Urban Rhythms | Original Mixed-Media Painting

Some walls hold the whole story of a city: the weather, the layers, and everything people have left on them.

Urban Rhythms is a large square abstract painting that reads like a wall come to life. The ground is a weathered silver-gray, spray-painted in smoky clouds with a fine black speckle. Thin vertical drips run down through it, and faint patches of mustard yellow and deep violet-gray bloom behind them. The canvas weave shows through, so the surface feels worn, as if it has stood outdoors through a few seasons.

Over it, loose, sinuous lines loop and cross in every direction. They are drawn in coral-orange, sky blue, lemon yellow, and white, with a few thin black threads. Broad, flat bars of violet punctuate them like paint chips or torn posters. In places the lines gather into shapes that almost read as faces or eyes. A blue crescent at lower right looks like a watchful pupil, and a purple bar near the bottom reads as a wide, closed mouth. They come and go as you look, and the painting never settles on one reading.

Everything is in motion. Some strokes are sharp and graphic, while others are softened by spray so the colors blur at their edges. The bright lines are lively against the quiet gray, and the drips give the whole piece a sense of time passing.

At 40" × 40", it has real presence over a sofa, a bed, or a large office wall. The gray base keeps it modern and calm, and the bright strokes bring in energy.
