Above & Below | Original Mixed-Media Painting
Every canvas has a horizon. In Above & Below, that horizon is the entire conversation.
This large, commanding abstract painting divides itself with quiet intentionality — two worlds sharing one surface, each one deepening the meaning of the other. The upper half is dense, textured, and warm. Plaster builds the surface into something almost architectural — layered, weathered, tactile. Rich terracotta and muted earth tones press against soft passages of blue, the colors of old brick and fading afternoon light. It is a surface you want to touch. Something that holds memory the way stone does.
Then the painting exhales.
Below the horizon, everything releases. Deep, saturated blues cascade downward in long, fluid vertical strokes — smooth and uninterrupted, moving the way water moves when nothing is stopping it. Latex and acrylic give the lower half a luminous, almost meditative quality that stands in complete contrast to the weight and texture above. Where the upper zone accumulates, the lower zone flows. Where one holds, the other lets go.
The place where the two worlds meet is where Above & Below is most alive — terracotta bleeding into blue, rough giving way to smooth, structure dissolving into movement. It is a boundary and a bridge at the same time.
Whether it reads as sky and water, earth and ocean, the built world and the natural one — that interpretation belongs entirely to you.
A beautifully balanced and visually arresting work that brings both warmth and calm to any space it inhabits.
