Reflection in Shadows | Original Mixed-Media Painting
Light never stays still, and this painting is built around that.
Reflection in Shadows is a small, square abstract painting that gets more interesting the longer you stand with it. A black ground frames the whole canvas and shows at the edges and across the top, where it breaks into ragged, torn-looking patches of white. Through it, tall vertical bands of paint run from top to bottom. Slate blue and periwinkle sit beside soft gray-lavender and pale ice blue. The brushwork is dragged and scraped, so the colors streak and fray into one another like a wall of rain or a reflection broken by ripples.
On the left, a bold column of warm gold runs nearly the full height of the canvas. Everything else in the painting is cool, so the gold stands out like a lit window or a late sun, and it keeps the cooler tones from going quiet.
Scattered across the surface are fragments of silver leaf. They are small, angular, and crinkled, and they sit on the blue and gray in pieces, one near the upper left, others near the center and lower right. They catch the light at different angles as you move past the painting, so it seems to change while you look at it.
White is dabbed and scraped across the top and along the edges, which gives the black real depth. The dark does not feel empty. It gives the silver its shimmer and the gold its warmth.
At 14" × 14", it is a good fit for a shelf, a desk, or a small gallery wall, where it can sit alone or join a group of other small works.
For collectors who love quiet, textural abstraction with a warm, bright note.
